National ‘Name Your Car’ Day
Why we treat our cars like people (and how to take better care of them)
October second marks National ‘Name Your Car Day’, and for those of you who own a “Eleanor” or a “Herbie” this holiday is a perfect time to reflect on why we name our vehicles and what that says about their impact on our lives.
We name our cars because, like horses before them, they provide a reliable sense of transportation with minimal upkeep. We take care of them, and in turn they take care of us. Cars are long-term investments, and a way we communicate who we are to the outside world. They are personal items, and naming them is a reflection of our personalities.
Car Ownership: It’s Personal
Our cars accompany us to many of our major life events. Weddings, first days of work, and unforgettable road trips are all mile markers on the path of our lives. There’s a good chance you remember your parent’s first car, and an even better one you remember your first one, too.
And as they’re so close to our lives, it’s only natural to personalize our vehicles by giving them unique names. So whether you have an “Ernest” a “Dolly”, or even a “Tater”, those names are markers to help you remember a specific period of time.
Time, Money, & Respect
Like any personal relationship, our vehicles are big responsibilities that come with positives and negatives. The freedom to go where we please when we please can not be understated. Reliable vehicles allow us to keep our jobs, engage in social events, and provide solutions to many modern emergencies.
But they also require care and attention as well. We must tend to our friends and family just like we do with our cars. But instead of a birthday card and regular phone calls, the maintenance on our cars is a bit more straightforward- regular checkups and preventative maintenance.
Taking Care of What’s Important
When discussing our health and the health of our loved ones, it’s not just the length of our lives that’s important, but the quality of them as well. The same can be said for your car or truck: The length of your ownership means nothing if it’s riddled with breakdowns, problems, and constant repairs.
In Pennsylvania, yearly state inspections help keep our vehicles in safe running condition. But that is only the first step in proper maintenance and care for your car or truck. There are a host of strategies and services you can employ when attempting to extend the length and quality of your ride.
