What Is The Difference Between Rust Proofing And Undercoating?
Rust is the enemy of any vehicle made of steel. If left unprotected it will inevitably win the battle and your vehicle will not be what it used to be. There are some things that you can do to protect your vehicle and its vulnerable frame and underbody by using one of the many rust-proofing or undercoating services that are available, including from us at Krown of South Central Pennsylvania. These terms almost seem to be used interchangeably but there are differences between them and the difference could have a profound effect on your vehicle.
Neither method is bad, especially when compared to the alternative which is doing nothing and letting your vehicle rust. It’s not that either is bad and there are people who swear by both. In fact you can take advantage of both of these!
Rust Proofing
Rust proofing is done by spraying a protective wax all over the car and even into the car to protect hard to reach parts of the vehicle where moisture can accumulate. This has to be done on any part of the vehicle that is exposed to the elements and even on some parts of the interior of the vehicle as well.
Some of these products can be used on the underside and chassis of the vehicle but most are designed to be used to protect the frame and the paint of the vehicle. There are a lot of these products on the market that can be used, just walk into any auto parts store and have a look.
Undercoating
Undercoating is done by spraying an oil or a wax-based compound onto the entire underside of the vehicle and into hard to reach areas of the vehicle where moisture can get to. It creates a rust-proof layer that protects it from moisture and corrosion for about one year. In the case of Krown, it’s unique formula makes it self-healing so you will be protected throughout the course of the year.
Which One To Pick?
Rust proofing offers some advantages in that it protects the visible parts of the vehicle making for a much more aesthetically pleasing finish. An undercoating protects the underside of the vehicle so you will get a longer life from your vehicle.
Rust proofing can be done quickly and in many cases can be done in your driveway by yourself but to get a proper undercoating requires taking your vehicle to a shop and devoting a chunk of your day to it. Krown takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to apply once a year, so it’s not a huge loss of time. Everyone has a spare hour at some point in their life. It’s about the same amount of time that you will spend washing and waxing your vehicle once during the warmer months so if you do this, you have time to get a Krown undercoating from Krown of South Central Pennsylvania.
Why Not Both?
Here’s the kicker though. You don’t need to pick protection either from rust proofing or an undercoating. You can have them both. You can have Krown applied and still say wash and wax your vehicle or use a rust proofing product on the painted areas of the vehicle. Just remember, if a rust proofing product says it can be used on the underside of the vehicle it will not offer the same level of protection that Krown will. If you want your vehicle to look nice use a rust, proofing product. It you want your vehicle to last, use an undercoating product or service. If you want both, do both.
