Can Rust Be Stopped Once It Starts?
When you get either a Krown undercoating or a LINE-X bedliner one of the major reasons that you are doing it is to stop rust. Many drivers get this done when they purchase their vehicle to give them the most protection possible but not everyone does. Some drivers are late to the game and some never do it at all. For the latter they believe that once rust has started it cannot be stopped and there is no point in spending good money to fight rust. Is that true? Can rust be stopped or slowed with a product like Krown or LINE-X or is it a lost cause?
What Is Rust?
First, what exactly is rust? It is the oxidation of a metal surface that happens when the surface molecules of the metal react with oxygen in the atmosphere and produce iron oxide. If left unchecked this happens to all steel or iron products inevitably. Just how long it takes for this to happen depends on the quality of the metal. Poorly made iron or steel can begin to rust almost immediately. Higher quality metal can take years to show signs.
Rust is usually first seen as small problems like nicks or cracks in the paint of the vehicle. If left unchecked the surface then will become exposed and begin to corrode. This can be exacerbated with chemical substances like road salt that act as electrolytes. Holes will then begin to form as the steel becomes iron oxide and at that point there is nothing that can be done.
But Aren’t Modern Techniques Helping To Prevent Rust?
Chances are your vehicle is made from high quality materials. It is not a poorly made car from decades ago, so yes there has been a lot of time and effort by auto manufacturers that went into trying to make your car as rust proof as possible. Some of this involves coatings on the sheet metal used with your vehicle. Some of this is using a less corrosive metal like aluminum instead. Most metal is also dipped into an anti-corrosive agent before the vehicle is painted and the underside of the vehicle is coated with a chemical that acts against oxidation.
So yes, your vehicle is far superior to the vehicle your parents drove when it comes to rust prevention. But there is more that can be done as these coatings wear off over time. That is where an undercoating like Krown or a bedliner from LINE-X can help to extend the life of the vehicle.
Can Rust Be Stopped Or Slowed?
If you are someone who has never had their vehicle protected you will deal with oxidation at some point. You may be dealing with it now. It is best to deal with it as soon as possible. On the underside of your car Krown is just what you need. Krown can be applied to cars that have rust. It is absorbed into existing corrosion and works to draw moisture out of the metal helping to stop oxidation and prevent rust from spreading.
But it is best to do this as soon as possible. There does come a time when no product, even one as good as Krown, can help. Krown should be applied yearly to maximize protection as it does wear down over the course of a year. LINE-X bedliners will prevent moisture from even reaching the surface metal and since it is sprayed on there are no seams that moisture can work its way into. If that is stopped no rust can form.
Don’t fight rust. Don’t wait for rust to form. Prevent it with Krown and LINE-X!
