How To Fix Rusted Areas On Your Car
Rust can quickly spread and become a huge problem, especially with cars. It not only affects the functionality and aesthetics of your vehicle, but it can only cost you hundreds if not thousands to repair.
It’s best to treat rust as quickly as possible to save yourself from grief later on down the road when the damage becomes more severe. Here, we’ve made a step-by-step guide on how to fix your car’s minor rust issues and how you can successfully get rid of these nasty brown spots.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Primer
- Rust remover
- Touch-up paint pens
- Spray paint of matching color
- Sandpaper
- Grease and wax remover
- Masking tape
- Gloves
- Protective eyewear
- Dust mask
- Clean rug
You can easily and quickly fix small rust spots using an aerosol or liquid rust remover. Use this method if you’re worried that your car has small spots of rust on its roof or chips on the edges of the hood.
- Mask off rust-infected areas using tape. Make sure that there are a few inches of protection surrounding the rusted spot.
- Wear protective gear to protect yourself from fumes that will come from the rust remover.
- Follow the instructions listed on the rust remover can. Usually, it’ll only say to brush or spray it on the rusted areas and let the chemical sit for a few minutes.
- Wipe off the residue with a clean rag.
- Remove any remaining rust using sandpaper.
- Clean the area with a grease and wax remover. Let it dry.
- Spray a light-to-medium coat of primer and spray three times, each with an interval of one hour for drying before the next coat.
- Test your paint on a piece of cardboard first to see how the paint will look before applying it to your car. You can also try various distances and overlaps along with back and forth patterns.
- When you’re confident with the prime coat, start painting the base coat. Apply five to six coats to completely cover the area. Be sure to prevent drips by giving the paint plenty of time to rest in between coats.
- Use a clear coat when the base coat is completely dry. Hold off from washing for two to three days and wait at least two months before getting your car waxed.
Tips
Ensure that rust won’t ruin your car by getting a head start and protecting your vehicle before rust accumulates. There are plenty of ways to make sure that rust will have no chance of invading your car.
- Give your car multiple coats of wax so that grime and water can be easily wiped off during the winter season.
- Don’t allow road chemicals and snow to accumulate on your car. If you’ll frequently need to drive on salty or snowy roads, wash your car immediately once you’re at home, even if it’s a cold day. Don’t forget to pay close attention to hard-to-reach areas.
- Use our Krown Rust Protection spray-on protective coating, which can also be applied on tools, various equipment, trailers, boats, cars, and almost anything you can think of. It provides a thin layer of protection to let you rest easy knowing that your car’s surface has durable and long-lasting protection against rust that goes beyond your expectations.
