Is Electronic Rust Proofing Worth It?
There may have been a time that you have been offered a deal that seems to be the solution to all of your car’s rust problems. For one simple payment, whether it was (or is) to the dealer or a third party you car can be protected for years to come, maybe even the life of the vehicle. Sounds good doesn’t it? For many it does and they have gone ahead with it. What is this? It is Cathodic Protection (CP) or more commonly known as Electronic Rust Proofing and we are here to tell you that it does not work with your car.
How Does Cathodic Protection Work?
It works on a simple concept, that is that by keeping electrons flowing through metal no rust will occur. By this continuous negative charge (supplied by a device installed in the car) rust will not be able to form. The process works and can be commonly used to protect bridges and ships from rusting. This is pitched as proof that the process works and that it can work with your vehicle too.
Why Cathodic Protection Does Not Work
These devices depend on a circuit being completed. For bridges the wet soil completes the circuit. For ships the salt water completes the circuit. The air around your vehicle does not complete the circuit for your car. Unless you drive in water constantly or park your vehicle in the soil (or in salt water) you cannot complete the circuit and thus CP is worthless when it comes to protecting your vehicle.
Cathodic Protection uses a box that is installed on the car connected to the metal with anodes. It receives its charge from your car’s battery. These devices typically cost up to $150, though they can be found for much cheaper online, and of course dealers tend to markup the price in some cases by up to 600%. Obviously it’s a hefty cost but it is pitched that it is a one-time payment that will solve the issue for a decade. You will not need to pay money and take your time every year to have rust protections like Krown applied and reapplied they claim. It sounds good and many people have taken them up on it.
Why Krown Is Superior
When a dealer sells Cathodic Protection they are typically selling it with a new car and they have a captive audience (you). At this point the buyer has already plunked down thousands of dollars so what is another thousand at that point right? When the customer objects and says that they are interested in another rust proofing product like Krown instead they tell them that Krown will void their new vehicle’s warranty. We mentioned detailed this a few weeks ago, don’t fall for this!
Rust does not happen when metal is wet or when metal is dry. It happens where the wet and dry metal meet. This happens in all of the little nooks and crannies of the vehicle that you probably don’t even know are there and that you definitely can’t reach. That is where Krown excels and it is also why drilling holes into the vehicle’s body is necessary.
Krown may look messy but by being able to reach into every nook and cranny on the vehicle more of the vehicle is protected. The holes drilled are small using a special drill bit and are filled in after completion. When completed your vehicle is protected for the next year from rust!
The Choice Is Easy
Electronic Rust Proofing may sound good. It may sound almost too good to be true. There are certainly people that will swear by it but in the end it does not work. If you have been offered Electronic Rust Proofing do your own research on it before going ahead with it. If the salesman says it is a one-time offer they are just trying to get your money by creating a sense of urgency. They do not want you to do any research because if you do you will find that consumers favor services like Krown more often than not.
It should also be known that many Electronic Rust Proofing options have been banned in parts of the US in Canada because they do not work. If you are looking for superior rust protection, look no farther than Krown!
